Thank you for your interest in the Joseph House Art Gallery Cooperative! As the name implies, our Gallery is owned and operated by the talented artists who exhibit there. We opened our doors in the year 2000 in order to provide a venue for regional artists. Since then the Gallery has exceeded expectations for growth and profitability and the future looks even brighter. While cooperative galleries are becoming more popular, the Joseph House Art Gallery is unique in this region. We have over 65 artists. Some live as far away as Birmingham, AL, and Suwannee, GA. Others live just down the street. We are proud to offer original artwork from some of the area’s most talented artists. The wide range of artwork varies in price and in style, giving the customer a broad choice of contemporary and traditional art. Our ever-changing displays keep the look of the Gallery fresh and exciting. |

| About the Cooperative |
A cooperative is basically a democratic business process that actually works! The key factor is getting the right people involved who will do their share. Our gallery is incorporated and is managed by an elected committee of members from the Gallery. Members are required to staff the Gallery for 4 hours each month, and to pool their talents to ensure that the business runs smoothly. The day-to-day business of the Gallery is handled by various committees from advertising to housekeeping. Active participation by members in one or more committees is essential for the continued success of the Gallery. |
| All we ask |
Membership in the Joseph House Art Gallery is a privilege and, as such, it comes with certain expectations and responsibilities. Members of the cooperative are required to: Staff the Gallery 4 hours per month. Attend bi-annual membership meetings. Participate in one or more committees. Keep dues and fees current. Present work in a professional manner. Participate in quarterly rotation, i.e. moving to new wall space. Refresh artwork periodically and maintain accurate inventory records. Replace sold items as soon as possible. Although not required, it is highly recommended that each artist bring in several new pieces at each rotation. It has been proven that our artists’ sales increase when they exhibit new artwork each quarter. |
| Benefits of Membership |
You are the gallery owner! An artist-owned gallery gives you a place to showplace your work. Seldom will you find a gallery that has artists helping and supporting other artists like the Joseph House Art Gallery. Members price their own work. Most of the art sold at the Joseph House Art Gallery falls within the $100-$700 price range. However, the Joseph House does sell art costing considerably more and significantly less. Our membership includes artists with established art careers, and others who had never before shown their work in a gallery setting. We do not insist on exclusive contracts with our artists, and we show a wide range of artistic mediums and styles. Belonging to the Joseph House Art Gallery gives you exposure to thousands of new potential customers looking to purchase your art. We offer expert public relations and marketing through various media outlets. The JHG has monthly featured-artist exhibitions as well as quarterly receptions and activities that generate wide public interest. In addition to local clientele, customers come from Montgomery, Atlanta and Birmingham - larger cities where galleries abound - yet they are intrigued by the charm of Columbus and welcomed by a gallery that is friendly, and not intimidating. The artists retain 90% of all money generated from the sale of their artwork. While most galleries take 40-50% commission; the JHG retains only 15% of each sale. As a community of artists, we offer support, education and creative inspiration! We look forward to having you join us! |
